May Council Meeting Highlights
The regular monthly meeting of the parish council took place this past Wednesday evening. In attendance were: Harriet Rennie, president; Karen Kain, vice-president; Fr. Iakovos, Helen Knapp, Stephanie Long, Doug Partlo, Theresa Patterson and Bob Underwood. Absent with apologies were: Mike Dennos, treasurer; Judy Weston, secretary; and John Batsakis. Present to record the meeting in Ms. Weston’s stead was Tina Partlo. Present in the gallery was Ray Ealy. Mrs. Helen Dalbo’s stewardship report was read and approved.
The committee reported $100,700 in pledges for 2008 from 64 households through the end of April. The average pledge is $1,573.44 per household. Total pledged monies received to date are $27,647. A breakdown of pledges by amount was also provided and is posted on the bulletin board and on our web site for those that are interested. The Council voted that they will formally recognise the work of Helen Dalbo, Donna Psaros and Judy Weston on the stewardship drive over one of the upcoming Sundays.
A report of our bookstore activity showed total costs for the month of $137.65 and total revenue of $169.75. The Council voted that they will formally recognize the work of Angie and Roger Dunlap over one of the upcoming Sundays.
In Fr. Iakovos’ report the council heard information on the Church Directory project, a lively discussion of the potential marketing strategies for the church, a review of Holy Week and Pascha, the Metropolis Youth Camp Project, the Templon Project, the Habitat for Humanity Project and a brief mention of a proposed golf outing fund raiser.
The monthly financial statements were reviewed and approved. Our Profit and Loss statement for the four months of 2008 shows a net deficit of $2,562.92. There was some discussion over our capital reserve fund and the amount of interest being earned there and a committee of Doug Partlo and Bob Underwood will join Fr. Iakovos in meeting with our banker to address strategies to generate more interest income.
Helen Knapp gave a report on the flower fund collection for the holy days. Ms. Knapp reported $848 in donations received with expenditures of $427 for the decoration of the tomb, $50 for palm decorations and $45 for the crown for the Cross. The balance of the funds will be applied to the purchase of flowers for Pentecost and part of the Dormition.
Bob Underwood provided a report on the Taste of Greece fundraiser which is scheduled for Thursday, 24 July at St. Francis High School in Traverse City. Cost of tickets this year will be $14. Mr. Underwood and Mr. Batsakis will begin meetings in earnest on this project soon. Anyone interested in helping out in any capacity is encouraged to speak with Bob or John at their earliest opportunity. Proceeds from this year’s event will be put against our regular operating expenses.
